Title 15 › CHAPTER 7 — NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY › § 278g–3b
NIST must create and publish rules within 90 days after December 4, 2020. The rules tell federal agencies how to use and manage Internet of Things (IoT) devices that the agency owns or controls and that are linked to agency computer systems. The rules must include basic cybersecurity steps and match NIST work already in place on December 4, 2020 about common IoT security problems and how to handle them, including things like secure development, identity control, patching, and configuration. NIST must also consider private-sector and agency best practices. Within 180 days after NIST finishes those rules, the Director of OMB must check agency security policies to make them match the new rules (except for national security systems). OMB must work with CISA and follow other federal information security law (subchapter II of chapter 35 of title 44). NIST must review and update the rules at least every 5 years, and OMB has 180 days after any update to revise its policies. The Federal Acquisition Regulation must be changed as needed to put these rules into practice.
