Title 15 › Chapter 64— METHANE TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, AND DEMONSTRATION › § 3801
Creates a federal program to study and promote using methane (the main part of natural gas) as a fuel for vehicles. Congress found that gasoline and diesel are in short supply, methane is more available in the U.S. and can be made from coal, plants, and waste, and that using methane could cut oil imports, lower emissions, and is safe in properly changed fleet vehicles. Much recoverable methane is not being used now. The policy is to pay for and speed up research and development, show that methane vehicles work and are cost‑effective for fleets and farm equipment, remove barriers to their use, encourage switching when it helps meet air quality goals, and to add to—but not replace—private industry efforts.
