Banks and other financial companies must respect customer privacy and keep customers’ private information safe. The federal agencies that oversee those companies, except the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, must write rules that require staff practices, computer protections, and physical safeguards. The rules must keep records private, guard against expected threats or damage, and stop unauthorized access or use that could cause serious harm or big trouble for customers.
