Title 15 › Chapter 104— SPORTS AGENT RESPONSIBILITY AND TRUST › § 7801
Sets clear meanings for words used in the chapter. An "agency contract" is a verbal or written deal where a student athlete lets someone negotiate a pro sports or endorsement deal for them. An "athlete agent" is a person who signs or tries to sign a student athlete to such a deal, but not the athlete’s spouse, parent, sibling, grandparent, guardian, or a lawyer who is not acting as an agent, nor someone working only for a pro team. "Athletic director" runs a school’s sports program. "Commission" means the Federal Trade Commission. An "endorsement contract" pays an athlete for use of their name, image, or likeness. "Intercollegiate sport" means college-level sports governed by a national body. A "professional sports contract" is a deal to play or work as a professional athlete. "State" includes all U.S. states, DC, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. territories. A "student athlete" is anyone who plays, is eligible to play, or might be eligible to play college sports; someone permanently barred from a sport is not a student athlete for that sport.
