§9202 Nsf Support of Research on Manipulated or Synthesized Content and Information Security

Summary

The National Science Foundation must fund merit-reviewed, competitively awarded research, after talking with other federal agencies, on manipulated or computer-made content and on how to check if information is real. That funding can support basic tools to detect altered or AI-created content (including content made by generative adversarial networks), technical methods like watermarking, social and behavioral studies about how people react, research on public awareness and education, and coordinated awards with agencies such as DARPA and IARPA through the NITRD program.
