The Secretary can help pay part of the cost so project sponsors can buy permanent conservation easements on wetlands and floodplains. Those easements must protect, restore, and improve the land’s natural ability to hold floodwater, help water quality and quantity, and provide habitat for fish and wildlife. For watershed projects, sponsors must pay up to 50 percent of the easement purchase cost.
