Title 16 › Chapter 24— CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION OF NORTH PACIFIC FUR SEALS › Subchapter II— ADMINISTRATION OF PRIBILOF ISLANDS › § 1168
Work done by natives of the Pribilof Islands before January 1, 1950 — like taking and curing fur seal skins and other island-administration tasks — will count as federal civilian service for civil service retirement if the Secretary decides that records show the work was done. If someone who did that work died or was already retired and getting a civil service annuity before November 2, 1966, their annuity or their survivor’s annuity can be changed to the amount it would have been if the work had counted at the time. The annuitant must apply within one year after November 2, 1966, and the change takes effect the first day of the month after November 2, 1966. This credit does not give the benefits in section 8342(h) of title 5. Payments will come from the civil service retirement and disability fund, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration must repay that fund from its Operations, Research, and Facilities Account. The Director of the Office of Personnel Management will figure the yearly cost.
