Title 16 › Chapter 27— NATIONAL TRAILS SYSTEM › § 1245
The Interior or Agriculture Secretary may add, name, and mark side or connecting trails on lands they manage so those trails become part of national recreation, scenic, or historic trails. If no federal land is bought, those trails can cross state, local, or private land with permission, and approval requests for nonfederal trails must go to the Secretary in charge.
