Title 16 › Chapter 28— WILD AND SCENIC RIVERS › § 1283
Federal officials who manage lands — including the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture and other agency heads — must, after November 10, 1978, change policies, rules, contracts, and plans for lands that include, border, or are next to rivers that are in or being considered for the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System so the rivers are protected. Where appropriate, they must make written agreements with state or local officials to plan and manage Federal lands inside river boundaries and watch planned logging, road building, or similar work that could harm the rivers. They must not cancel existing private rights or contracts affecting Federal lands without the private party’s consent. Agency heads must also work with the Environmental Protection Agency and state water pollution agencies to reduce river pollution.
