Beginning in fiscal year 2012, the Secretary may hire certain former interns directly into jobs without following most of the usual federal hiring rules, except for sections 3303 and 3328 of those rules. The person must meet Office of Personnel Management qualification standards and must be a former resource assistant who completed a rigorous undergraduate or graduate summer internship with the Secretary (for example, the National Park Service Business Plan Internship), finished the internship requirements, and then earned an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited school. The Secretary cannot use this direct-hire option for a specific person more than two years after that person finished their degree. Secretary — the official named in section 1722. Former resource assistant — the resource assistant role described in section 1722.
