Title 16 › Chapter 38— FISHERY CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT › Subchapter V— FISHERY MONITORING AND RESEARCH › § 1884
The Secretary must set up a program, working with regional fishery councils, other federal agencies, and schools, if money is available. The program must collect and share existing research and known coral locations; find and map deep sea coral sites; monitor places where corals live or might live using underwater or remote tools; do research (including with fishing industry participants) and improve survey methods; develop ways to help fishers avoid catching or damaging corals; and focus work on areas where corals are known or likely to be present. Beginning 1 year after January 12, 2007, the Secretary, with the councils, must send reports every two years to Congress and the public. The reports must describe steps taken to identify, monitor, and protect deep sea coral areas and must summarize the mapping, research, and data collected under the program.
