Title 16 › CHAPTER 1 — NATIONAL PARKS, MILITARY PARKS, MONUMENTS, AND SEASHORES › SUBCHAPTER LIX–Z — NEW ORLEANS JAZZ NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK › § 410bbb–2
The Secretary must run the jazz historical park like other National Park units, following the park laws from August 25, 1916, and August 21, 1935, and must protect and teach the history and continuing development of jazz as an American art form. To save money and avoid duplicate work, the Secretary should use the facilities and staff of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve when possible. The Secretary can accept donations of money, property, or services to support park programs and facilities. The Secretary may build and operate an interpretive center on park lands the Secretary selects. The center can offer live jazz performances, education programs, and information about jazz events and opportunities. The Secretary can help New Orleans and others set up jazz heritage districts in areas with many jazz sites and parade traditions. After consulting the New Orleans Jazz Commission, the Secretary can make cooperative agreements or grants with property owners, the city, the State of Louisiana, and other groups to restore, mark, preserve, operate, and provide access to important jazz sites and the center. The Secretary must promote a wide range of jazz education, work with schools and colleges, and help create archives and materials about jazz history.
