§410ww–23 General Powers of Commission

Summary

The Commission can hold hearings, take testimony, and collect evidence when it thinks it is useful. It can ask for and accept gifts of money, property, or services from people, foundations, companies, and public groups. The Commission may spend its own money to get funds from programs that require the recipient to make a contribution. It can use the U.S. mail like other federal agencies. Money or other assets it gets from donations, leases, sales, or fees can be kept and used for any Commission activity without yearly limits. The Commission can run historical, educational, or cultural programs about Miami Valley places tied to the Wright brothers, aviation, and Paul Laurence Dunbar, and it can give technical or preservation help to owners of properties in the listed districts and sites. The Commission may buy, rent, or accept property, facilities, and services it needs, but it can only get land in two ways: as a gift (including a gift in a will) or by buying from a willing seller using money given to the Commission specifically for that purpose. Any land obtained this way must be transferred to a government agency as soon as possible, with no payment, and it must be used for public purposes.
