Summary

Creates the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park to protect and explain the canal’s historic and scenic features and to support public recreation and needed restoration. The park lies in Maryland, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia and at first includes about 5,250 acres of federal land along the canal, including the areas already named the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Monument. The park’s outer lines match a map called “Boundary Map, Proposed Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park,” five sheets, number CHOH 91,000, dated October 1969, on file with the National Park Service. The Secretary of the Interior may add lands inside those boundaries by donation, purchase with donated or appropriated money, or land exchange. State-owned land will not become part of the park unless the state gives the land or signs a written cooperative agreement that meets national park rules and the agreement’s terms are sent to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the House Committee on Natural Resources at least 60 days before it is finalized. If the Secretary and a State complete such a cooperative agreement, the Secretary must not buy any lands the map shows for state acquisition for two years from January 8, 1971.
