§460aa–13 Area Analysis for Park or Park Administrative Unit Proposal

Summary

The Secretary of the Interior must work with federal, state, and local agencies to study the natural, economic, and cultural values of the recreation area and the nearby Pioneer Mountains to see if a national park or similar park unit should be created. He must send a report with his recommendation to Congress by December 31, 1974. The report must show he considered alternative land uses and their short- and long-term effects on things like the state and local economy, the natural and cultural environment, water use, grazing, timber, minerals and other commercial activities, fish and wildlife, existing private homes and businesses and future development, and how recreation, wilderness, and park lands connect. He must also consider making a park in the mountain peaks and uplands while leaving valleys and low areas for multiple uses. Any recommendation to create a park unit must include a master plan showing proposed boundaries, roads, visitor facilities, and management ideas; an estimate of federal costs for land, development, and operation; and proposed legislation to establish the unit. Up to $50,000 is authorized to carry out this work.
