Summary

The Secretary, through the Chief of the Forest Service, must manage the Recreation Area under National Forest rules to protect scenery, science, history, culture, and other values that people enjoy. The rules must conserve fish and wildlife and their habitat (including using controlled fire when needed), protect watersheds and water quality, allow public outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping, protect any wilderness areas Congress set aside, and use natural resources in ways that fit the area's purpose. Hunting, trapping, and fishing are allowed under U.S. and Nevada law, but the Secretary, after consulting the Nevada Department of Wildlife, can set places or times when they are not allowed for safety or management reasons. Livestock grazing may continue under federal law and under reasonable rules the Secretary sets. The Secretary may also take reasonable steps to prevent or control fires, insects, or disease to protect the land and resources.
