§460ii–5 Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Advisory Commission

Summary

Creates an advisory commission to give advice to the Secretary about running the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, protecting its resources, and deciding which lands should be bought first. The commission has 13 voting members the Secretary appoints: four recommended by the county boards of Forsyth, Fulton, Cobb, and Gwinnett; one recommended by the Governor of Georgia; one by the Atlanta Regional Commission; four by a coalition of citizens/public interest/recreation/environment groups; one by the Business Council of Georgia or a nearby chamber of commerce; and two public members (at least one must live in one of the four counties). The Park Superintendent is a nonvoting member. The group chooses one member to be Chair. Members normally serve three-year terms and can be reappointed once for another three years. At the start, the county appointees served one year; the Governor, Atlanta Regional Commission, business/chamber, and public appointees served two years; the others served three years. The commission must meet regularly, publish meeting notices and agendas in local newspapers that cover the park area, and hold meetings that let the public take part. Members are unpaid, but the Secretary may pay reasonable expenses with vouchers signed by the Chair. The commission ends on October 30, 1994.
