§460n–3 Purposes and Uses of Area

Summary

The Secretary of the Interior must manage Lake Mead National Recreation Area for public recreation, benefit, and use. The area must be protected and improved as much as possible so people can enjoy it, while keeping its scenic, historic, scientific, and other important features. Management must follow any existing reservations, limits, or other authorized uses for the land. While doing this, the Secretary may allow certain activities under rules he sets, as long as they do not conflict with recreation or with the main reclamation uses of parts of the area. Allowed activities include general recreation (for example, bathing, boating, camping, and picnicking), grazing, mineral leasing, and vacation cabin site use under Department of the Interior policies.
