Summary

Creates El Malpais National Monument in western New Mexico to protect the Grants Lava Flow, the Las Ventanas Chacoan Archeological Site, and other important natural and cultural places. The monument covers about 114,000 acres as shown on the map called “El Malpais National Monument and National Conservation Area” (map no. NM–ELMA–80,001–B, May 1987). That map is on file at the National Park Service. After December 31, 1987, the Secretary of the Interior must file a legal description of the monument with the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs of the United States House of Representatives and with the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the United States Senate. That description has the same legal effect as if it were written into the law, and the Secretary may fix clerical or typographical errors in the description or the map. The legal description is also on file at the National Park Service.
