The trail must use public roads to connect nine specific national sites, for example El Malpais (established under part A) and Petroglyph, along with El Morro, Chaco, Aztec Ruins, Canyon de Chelly, Pecos, Gila Cliff Dwellings, and Zuni‑Cibola. The Secretary may add segments using the required process to link them to other sites when those sites are designated and protected by federal, state, or local governments, Indian tribes, or nonprofit groups.
