§460uu–21 Establishment; Description of Area

Summary

Creates the El Malpais National Conservation Area in western New Mexico to protect La Ventana Natural Arch and the area's important geological, archaeological, ecological, cultural, scenic, scientific, and wilderness features around the Grants Lava Flows. The area covers about 262,690 acres of federal land and is shown on a map titled "El Malpais National Monument and National Conservation Area," number NM–ELMA–80,001–B, dated May 1987, on file at the Bureau of Land Management Director’s office. The Secretary of the Interior must, as soon as practicable after December 31, 1987, file a legal description with the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the United States Senate and the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs of the United States House of Representatives. That description has the same legal force as if written into the law, and the Secretary may correct clerical or typographical errors. A copy is available for public inspection at the BLM Director’s office.
