§460uu–21 Establishment; Description of Area

Summary

Creates the El Malpais National Conservation Area in western New Mexico to protect La Ventana Natural Arch and the unique natural, cultural, and scientific features around the Grants Lava Flows. The conservation area covers about 262,690 acres as shown on a map titled "El Malpais National Monument and National Conservation Area," map number NM–ELMA–80,001–B, dated May 1987, kept at the Bureau of Land Management director’s office. As soon as practical after December 31, 1987, the Secretary must file a legal description of the area with the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. That description has the same legal effect as if printed here, but the Secretary may fix clerical or typographical errors. A copy is also available for public inspection at the BLM director’s office.
