§460vv–8 Indian Nations National Scenic and Wildlife Area

Summary

Certain lands in the Ouachita National Forest in Oklahoma are set aside as the Indian Nations National Scenic and Wildlife Area to protect scenery and wildlife. The area is shown on a map dated March 1988. The Secretary of Agriculture must, as soon as possible after October 18, 1988, send a copy of that map and a written legal description to three Congressional committees (House Committees on Interior and Insular Affairs and on Agriculture, and the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry). Those items will count the same as if they were written into the law, but clerical or typographical errors may be fixed. The map and description must be kept in the Forest Service chief’s office for the public to see. The Secretary must run the area under the same laws and rules used for national forests and manage it to meet the goals above. Any work that would harm the views from Talimena Drive and Holson Valley Road is not allowed. Tree work should create a mix of hardwoods and conifers, with different ages and lots of food trees and den trees for wildlife. The usual method must be uneven‑aged forestry. Even‑aged cuts are allowed only for public safety, to fight fire, insects, or disease, or when such cuts are hidden behind geographic features so they do not affect the road views.
