Do not dig up, remove, damage, change, or try to do those things to fossils on Federal land unless you follow the rules in this chapter. Also do not trade, move, export, receive, buy, or sell fossils if you knew or should have known they were taken from Federal land illegally. Do not make or submit false records, labels, or identifications for fossils removed from Federal land. If you knowingly break these rules or help someone else do it, you can be fined under title 18, jailed for up to 5 years, or both. If the fossils’ value plus repair costs is $500 or less, jail time is up to 2 years. A repeat offense may double the penalty. The digging/removal rule does not apply to fossils lawfully owned before March 30, 2009.
