Title 16 › Chapter 2— NATIONAL FORESTS › Subchapter I— ESTABLISHMENT AND ADMINISTRATION › § 478a
The Secretary of Agriculture can set aside up to 640 acres of National Forest land in Alaska or the eleven contiguous Western States as a townsite when the land borders a community and transferring it would better serve indigenous community goals than keeping it federal. After public notice and a local government's showing of need, the Secretary may sell the land for at least fair market value and can require a local ordinance to keep control so uses won’t interfere with nearby National Forest protection, management, or development.
