Title 16 › Chapter 2— NATIONAL FORESTS › Subchapter I— ESTABLISHMENT AND ADMINISTRATION › § 497a
The Secretary of Agriculture may allow people to use and live on national forest lands in Alaska, under rules he sets, for things like homes, recreation, public services, education, farming, industry, or commerce, if those uses don’t hurt forest management. Permits can last up to 30 years and cover up to 80 acres. While a permit is active, that land can’t be claimed under public land, mining, or mineral leasing laws. The Secretary may cancel a permit if its terms are broken or for other valid reasons.
