The Secretary of Agriculture can rent property from Forest Service employees. He can feed, care for, and house animals and store vehicles and equipment the Service gets from employees. He can hire others to train and care for reserve pack animals for fire use and let contractors use that stock when the Service is not using it. He can reimburse owners for loss or damage to horses, vehicles, or other equipment obtained from employees or private owners, using Forest Service funds. Except for firefighting emergencies, payments are limited to $50 for people who were Service employees when the item was obtained, or $2,500 in other cases, unless there was a written agreement.
