Title 16 › Chapter 2— NATIONAL FORESTS › Subchapter I— ESTABLISHMENT AND ADMINISTRATION › § 539e
The Secretary must track timber supply and demand in southeastern Alaska and send a yearly report to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the House Committee on Natural Resources. Within five years from December 2, 1980, and every two years thereafter, the Secretary must review the Tongass National Forest and report to Congress. The report must cover timber harvest levels since December 2, 1980; how wilderness designation has affected timber, fishing, and tourism; steps the Forest Service has taken to protect fish and wildlife; the status of the small business set-aside program in the Tongass; and how timber management affects subsistence resources, wildlife, and fish habitats. The study must be done by working with and consulting the State, affected Native Corporations, the southeast Alaska timber industry, the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, the southeast Alaska commercial fishing industry, and the Alaska Land Use Council.
