Title 16 › Chapter 3— FORESTS; FOREST SERVICE; REFORESTATION; MANAGEMENT › Subchapter I— GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 557
The Secretary of Agriculture can give Forest Service workers food, buy their personal gear and supplies, and take the cost out of their pay or other money due them. The Secretary can also pay for medical care for workers who are in remote places, move them to a hospital if needed, and, if a worker dies, move the body to the nearest place for preparation for burial or shipment. If a person without a permanent home or someone temporarily hired becomes sick or hurt while working and the problem was not caused by the job, the Forest Service can provide hospital care, other needed medical treatment, meals, and lodging for up to 15 days. The cost must be paid from Forest Service funds that apply to the work the person was doing.
