Title 16 › Chapter 3— FORESTS; FOREST SERVICE; REFORESTATION; MANAGEMENT › Subchapter I— GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 580
The Forest Service can bill other Forest Service projects or other federal agencies when they use Forest Service vehicles or equipment. The work is paid from the funds for that job. The Chief Forester sets rental rates based on actual or estimated costs like operation, repair, maintenance, depreciation, and equipment management. The money is put into current Forest Service funds when the billing is settled. The Forest Service may also rent equipment for fighting fires to states, counties, private groups, or other non‑Federal partners that have written agreements. Rental payments are added to the Forest Service’s current funds when received.
