Title 16 › Chapter 83— CORAL REEF CONSERVATION › § 6412
Agencies that have a representative on the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force (see section 6451) may, if funds are available, run prize competitions under section 3719 of title 15, alone or with other agencies. The prizes must encourage new ideas to study, monitor, manage, adapt, preserve, and restore coral reef ecosystems. Priority goes to projects that help communities, environments, or industries hurt by reef decline, such as research on causes and slow recovery (for example, ocean chemistry changes, bleaching, and disease), monitoring and management tools for financially stressed groups, economic adaptations to reduce job loss, help for vulnerable or rural communities and businesses, and support for tourism industries affected by reef damage.
