Title 16 › Chapter 6— GAME AND BIRD PRESERVES; PROTECTION › § 698c
The land shown on the official map in section 698 is made the Big Thicket National Preserve. The Secretary must run it as part of the National Park System and keep its natural and ecological values intact forever, under the rules in sections 698 to 698e and the Act of August 25, 1916 (39 Stat. 535; 16 U.S.C. 1–4). To protect the preserve, the Secretary must limit building roads, campgrounds, employee housing, and other public or administrative facilities. He must write and publish rules in the Federal Register to control uses like motorized vehicles, oil, gas and mineral work, new construction, grazing and farming, and any other activities needed to meet the preserve’s goals. Hunting, fishing, and trapping are allowed under U.S. and Texas law, but the Secretary may set closed zones or times for safety, wildlife protection, or public use; except in emergencies, those limits must be made after consulting the proper Texas agency.
