§941b Definitions

Summary

Defines key words used in the chapter. Committee means the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Proposal Review Committee set up under section 941c(c). Director means the Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Great Lakes Basin means the air, land, water, and living things in the drainage basin of the Saint Lawrence River at or upstream from where the river becomes the international boundary between Canada and the United States. Indian Tribe means a tribe, band, village, nation, or similar group that the Bureau of Indian Affairs recognizes for federal Indian programs and that has fish and wildlife management authority in the Great Lakes Basin. Lower Great Lakes means the part of the basin downstream from where the Saint Clair River meets Lake Huron near Port Huron, Michigan, and upper Great Lakes means the part upstream from that point. Non-Federal source includes State or local governments, Indian tribes, other non-Federal government entities, private groups, and individuals. Nonindigenous species means a plant, animal, or organism that was not in the Great Lakes Basin before European colonization of North America. Regional project means Fish and Wildlife Service activities to protect, restore, maintain, or improve fish and wildlife across more than one State or tribe in the basin. Report means the United States Fish and Wildlife Service report titled “Great Lakes Fishery Resources Restoration Study” submitted to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives on September 13, 1995. Restoration means bringing back and keeping the structure, function, diversity, and dynamics of an ecosystem, including reestablishing self-sustaining fish and wildlife populations. State Director means the head of the agency in each of New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who is responsible for that State’s fish and wildlife.
