Title 17 › Chapter 9— PROTECTION OF SEMICONDUCTOR CHIP PRODUCTS › § 906
Allows a person to copy a chip’s layout design (a mask work) only to teach, study, or test the ideas, circuits, logic flow, or how parts are arranged. The person who studies it can use what they learn to make and distribute a new, original mask work. Also lets the owner of a specific chip made by the mask work owner (or someone the owner authorized) import, sell, give away, or use that particular chip without the mask work owner’s permission, but they may not make copies of it.
