Anyone who, to get a loan that will be offered to or insured by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or to extend, renew, change, or influence a HUD‑insured loan, lies, forges or alters papers, uses forged documents, or willfully overstates the value of property, assets, or income, commits a crime. They can be fined under federal law, jailed for up to two years, or both.
