Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 71— OBSCENITY › § 1468
It is a crime to knowingly say obscene words or send obscene material over cable or subscription TV. A person who does this can be jailed for up to 2 years, fined under federal law, or both. "Distribute" here means sending or broadcasting material by cable, wire, microwave, satellite, or similar means, or making or providing material for that sending. Federal law does not stop states or local governments from making their own rules about obscene speech or material on cable or subscription TV.
