Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 77— PEONAGE, SLAVERY, AND TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS › § 1595
Victims can sue in federal court the person who harmed them or anyone who knowingly profited from the venture and can get damages and reasonable attorney fees. The case must be paused while a related criminal action (including investigation and prosecution) is pending until a trial court decision. A suit must be filed by the later of 10 years after the harm or 10 years after the victim turns 18 if a minor. A state attorney general may sue for residents harmed by a violator of section 1591.
