Breaking, opening, or destroying gates, fences, hedges, or walls that enclose U.S. lands held for public use, or driving or allowing livestock (like cattle, horses, or hogs) onto those lands where they can damage grass, trees, or other property, is a crime punishable by a fine under federal law, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both. The rule does not apply to unreserved public lands.
