Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 101— RECORDS AND REPORTS › § 2071
It is a crime to willfully hide, take away, change, damage, or destroy records, maps, books, papers, or other things kept in a U.S. court or public office, or to try to do any of those things. A person who does this can be fined, jailed for up to three years, or both. If someone who was in charge of or keeping those items does these acts, they face the same penalty and also lose their job and cannot hold any U.S. office. "Office" here does not mean the position a person holds as a retired U.S. military officer.
