Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 109— SEARCHES AND SEIZURES › § 2236
Federal officers who enforce the law must not search a private home without a warrant. If they do, a first offense can lead to a fine. A later offense can lead to a fine, up to one year in jail, or both. The rule does not apply when the officer is serving an arrest warrant; when arresting or trying to arrest someone caught committing a crime or reasonably suspected of a felony; or when the occupant asks for, invites, or agrees to the search.
