Title 18 › Part II— CRIMINAL PROCEDURE › Chapter 208— SPEEDY TRIAL › § 3163
A timing rule for people arrested or given a summons starts on the end of the 12‑month period after July 1, 1975 for anyone arrested or served on or after that date. It also starts on that same end date for people arrested or served before then, if no information or indictment had been filed against them before that date. The timing rule for offenses charged by information or indictment applies to charges filed on or after that same end date, and it also begins on that date for charges filed earlier. Section 3162 becomes effective and applies to cases started by arrest, summons, or filing on or after July 1, 1980, subject to section 3174(c).
