Makes it a crime to knowingly give false information about an attempt or a claimed attempt to commit certain federal crimes (including crimes listed in chapters 97 and 111). The U.S. government can sue and get a civil fine of up to $1,000. If the false report is done on purpose to harm, or with reckless disregard for people’s safety, the person can be criminally punished: fined, jailed for up to 5 years, or both.
