A person found guilty of a crime can be sent to jail or prison for a set period. The law gives these maximum terms: Class A felony — life or any period of time; Class B felony — up to 25 years; Class C felony — up to 12 years; Class D felony — up to 6 years; Class E felony — up to 3 years; Class A misdemeanor — up to 1 year; Class B misdemeanor — up to 6 months; Class C misdemeanor — up to 30 days; and an infraction — up to 5 days.
