The Bureau of Prisons can put a person into a shock incarceration program if the person is sentenced to more than 12 months but not more than 30 months and agrees to take part. For up to 6 months the person must follow a strict, military-style routine with discipline, physical training, hard labor, drill, and ceremony, and must take job training, education (including literacy), and drug, alcohol, and other counseling. If the Director finds they completed the program, they remain in Bureau custody for up to the remainder of their sentence under conditions the Bureau sets.
