Breaking certain parts of the Animal Welfare Act is a federal crime that can lead to fines, jail time, or both. Violating the parts labeled (a)(1), (b), (c), or (d) can bring up to 5 years in prison for each violation; (a)(2)(A) up to 1 year for each violation; and (a)(2)(B) up to 3 years for each violation.
