Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 27— CUSTOMS › § 546
Using a U.S. vessel to smuggle or try to smuggle goods into another country is a crime when that country's laws also punish those kinds of customs violations. Owners who let a vessel be used, people or companies in the United States who control the vessel, and anyone on board who helps with the smuggling can be charged. They can be fined, jailed for up to two years, or both. It is also a crime to rent or charter out a U.S. vessel if the owner or lessor knew or had good reason to believe the renter would use it for smuggling and the vessel is used that way during the rental.
