Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 31— EMBEZZLEMENT AND THEFT › § 653
Makes it a crime for a government paying officer, or someone acting like one, to use or move public money they were given to handle for any purpose not allowed by law. That includes using it as their own, loaning it, putting it somewhere not authorized, withdrawing it, transferring it, or applying it to the wrong purpose. That act is embezzlement. The person can be fined under federal law or fined up to the amount taken, whichever is larger. They can also be jailed for up to 10 years, or both. If the amount taken is $1,000 or less, the fine or jail time is up to 1 year, or both.
