If someone in certain places under U.S. jurisdiction steals another person’s property, they can be fined or jailed. For items worth more than $1,000 or taken from the person, the punishment is a fine, up to five years in prison, or both. Otherwise the penalty is a fine or up to one year in jail. If the stolen item is a debt paper, its value is the amount owed or the value it proves.
