When a customs inspector or other customs officer rides on a ship or vehicle while it goes from one port to another and back, the ship's captain or owner must pay the government back for the officer’s pay. The captain or owner must also pay the officer's actual meal and living costs, or instead give the officer the same passenger-style lodging the vessel or vehicle normally provides.
