A United States officer may not take, accept, or arrange to get any part of money that someone gets for making a seizure or for giving information that leads to a seizure. An officer who does this commits a felony and, if convicted, can be fined up to $10,000, jailed up to two years, or both, and then cannot hold any public office. Anyone who paid such money (or gave something of value for it) can sue to get that payment back.
