§1 References in Law to Committees of the House of Representatives.

Summary

Read older laws passed before January 4, 1995 as if they used the modern House committees that now handle the same work. The law lists ten common name changes and says you should read the old names as pointing to the newer committees (for example, references tied to armed forces, banking, education, energy and commerce, foreign affairs, government operations/oversight, House administration, natural resources, public works/transportation, and science are redirected to the current committees that handle those subjects). Some old committee names get special treatment. References to the District of Columbia committee or to Post Office and Civil Service usually point to the House oversight committee now in charge, except that matters about the franking (congressional mail) go to House Administration. The old Merchant Marine and Fisheries committee is split by topic: seafood inspection goes to Agriculture; canals, academies, and merchant-marine security go to Armed Services; fisheries, wildlife, and ocean affairs go to Natural Resources; marine research goes to Science; and other merchant-marine matters go to Transportation and Infrastructure. Also, some Energy and Commerce references are read as referring to Agriculture (for seafood inspection), Financial Services (for certain bank securities activity), or Transportation and Infrastructure (for railroad issues), and Government Operations references about special federal budget controls are read as referring to the Budget Committee.
